What next?

So now you now have your website and 100,000+ products to your name. The problem you will then face, like all other online businesses, is how do you get traffic to your site in large quantities? Well just follow these three basic steps and you will be straight away miles ahead of most of your online competitors.

 

Step One - Get a memorable domain name that reflects what you are selling. The domain name for this site is “online-business-tools.com”. Why was that chosen? Simply because online business tools are what we promote. Also, by placing hyphens between each word Google can read each word separately. (Note: This doesn’t work with underscores). If you choose something like “Hank’s shop” it doesn’t reflect your business. Also, don’t worry about long names - your site will be advertised online and potential prospects will click on the links you provide, they won’t need to remember your URL and if they like your site they’ll bookmark it. To choose an appropriate name try doing something like this:

  • Consider which niche you want to compete in.
  • Go to the Google Keywords Tool and type in keywords (or phrases) that best describe your niche. Select “Exact match” and this will then tell you how many searches per month are done using that exact match. If you find one that runs into tens or hundreds of thousands then look at creating a domain name that includes that key phrase. Let’s take an example - suppose the niche you want to focus on is digital cameras. Google Keywords will show there are about 13.6 million searches for the exact match of “digital camera”. (Our “Home Business Guide” provides an article to better understand keywords, and phrases such as “exact match” - Access to the guide is at the bottom of the page.)
  • Think of a domain name that includes the words of your exact match. An example for digital cameras could be all-brands-digital-cameras.com (When this was written this domain was still available!). Once Google has indexed your site then searches using a mixture of the words in the domain name will help get you a better position.
  • Always, without exception, use a .com domain name. If you are based outside of the US, such as for example the UK, get both .com and local domain tails, such as .co.uk. You can always “point” the local domain to the .com domain.

Step Two - You now have a website and a great domain name. So how are you going to get online traffic to your site? Well there are basically two methods:

  • Paid advertising
  • Free Advertising

The first is usually via something like Google AdWords. This can get very expensive if not done properly. Again, we have advice regarding Google AdWords in our “Home Business Guide”.

 

Obviously free advertising is the best, and there are many free advertising sites available, and we list a few of them in our “Links” page. Free advertising also comes from getting your website listed on as many directories as possible. This can be very time consuming, but for just $55.93 it can be done much faster by using a directory submitting tool. If you have a niche product, like digital cameras, you can write articles, reviews etc., and submit them to sites that will publish your article/review and this will give you another back link to your site. The more back links you have to your site the more serious Google will view your site, and the faster you will move up the search engine listings.
